Robert “Bob” Korstad has been surprised by the renewed interest from union leaders and workers in his 2003 book, “Civil Rights Unionism,” which details tobacco worker organizing in Winston-Salem in the 1940s. His work even inspired a 32-song opera, “Love Songs from the Liberation Wars,” and a short documentary film about the Winston-Salem sit-down strike.

In the aftermath of the Presidential Election of 2024, tens of thousands of Latinx workers and their allies engaged in marches, boycotts, strikes, and other forms of collective action against the federal government’s anti-immigrant and anti-labor policies. Mass protests in over 100 cities were aimed at President-elect Trump’s threat to deport upwards of ten million immigrants.
